Tomomi Tanaka to Speak on Safety by Design at MIT Club of Washington DC

Behavioral AI Lab founder Tomomi Tanaka will speak at the MIT Club of Washington DC on September 24 on Safety by Design and the role of behavioral science in building safer, more trustworthy AI systems.

Event

Behavioral AI Lab founder Tomomi Tanaka, PhD, will be the featured speaker at AI 360: Navigating the Dimensions of Artificial Intelligence, hosted by the MIT Club of Washington DC on September 24, 2026.

The session, “Safety by Design — Building Trust into AI from the Start,” will explore why many AI safety challenges emerge not only from model capabilities, but from how people interact with, interpret, trust, and respond to AI systems.

Drawing on her experience developing Safety by Design programs at Uber and Match Group, as well as her work across Amazon, Oracle, the World Bank, and Behavioral AI Lab, Tanaka will discuss how behavioral science can help organizations identify and reduce risks earlier in the design and development process.

The conversation will address emerging challenges including overtrust in AI outputs, AI-enabled social engineering, manipulation, harmful engagement patterns, and the broader behavioral dynamics of human–AI interaction.

The session will be moderated by Chandra Briggman, curator and host of the AI 360 series, and will include an interactive audience Q&A.
